With all of the information out there about weight loss, it’s hard to know what to believe and what is pure rubbish. Sometimes it seems like the experts change their minds about what works and what doesn’t every week. First, ditch the diet. That’s right, you are not going to pick one of the many fad diets to help you shed the pounds. If there’s one thing that’s obvious to anyone who has ever been on a diet, it is that they don’t work. Diets make you feel deprived and sooner or later you will get frustrated and quit dieting. Next thing you know, the weight is back and you have to start over again.

Instead of dieting, you need to make a series of small lifestyle changes that will put you on the road to healthier eating habits. Don’t do something drastic like giving up ice cream forever. Instead, pick something that will be relatively easy to implement. For example, during the first month of your new weight loss program you could drink diet soda instead of regular. Or maybe substitute dill pickles for the potato chips you usually munch on while watching TV.

Once the first month is over, you should have shed that old habit and replaced it with a new one that is much healthier. Now it’s time to pick a new habit to work on for month two. Don’t fall back into your first habit, though. Keep drinking your diet soda or whatever, but add something new the second month. For example, you could put banana slices on your peanut butter sandwiches instead of jelly.

Now what about next month? New month, new habit. You have plenty of unhealthy habits, or you wouldn’t be looking for weight loss tips. How about trying to drink more water this month? Drinking water can help you eat less because you will feel fuller. In fact, sometimes when you think you are hungry, you may actually be thirsty instead. This month, try drinking water whenever you feel hungry and then wait at least fifteen minutes before eating anything. You might just discover that you aren’t that hungry after all.

When you’re ready to move on to the next habit, here’s a great idea to try. Eat at least five servings of fruits and vegetables before you allow yourself to eat anything else. You’ll find that it’s extremely difficult to overeat when you are eating fruits and vegetables. By filling up on the stuff that’s good for you first, you keep yourself from overdoing it with less healthy foods.

You’ve been doing pretty good so far but you’re still not exercising, are you? Sooner or later, you are going to having to find a way to get your body moving. Try not to think of it as a workout. Instead, think of something fun that you like to do and make time for it in your schedule. Perhaps you could join a karate class or take swimming lessons. Whatever it is, make sure you enjoy it because you will be more likely to stick with it if you do.
